Westmorland Homecare, which provides in-home care for large parts of the North West, says learning how to cope after losing a loved one is a crucial part of their holistic, all-round care.

Russell Crossley, director of the firm based in Poulton le Fylde, said: “It’s very important to us, as a caring business, to offer an after care service. We don’t just stop when a client passes, we are there for their family too.

“We work with a professional counsellor who helps people overcome their grief. That’s available for those left behind – the partners, children or siblings of our clients – and for our own staff.”

A death can affect colleagues badly, as they are dedicated to their clients and build up a rapport with them, often working with them one-to-one for many years.

He added: “We want our staff to be well looked after. Losing a client can be really difficult, because we send regular staff to clients and they can build meaningful relationships – isn’t that what care is meant to be about?

“If our staff are suffering they are able to use our counsellor free of charge and completely anonymously.”

According to a survey carried out by supercarers.com, 97 per cent of us don’t want to go into a residential home, preferred to stay in our own homes for as long as possible.

Westmorland Homecare says that as well as the comfort of their own place, clients often find its service is cheaper and more personalised.

This can be beneficial for people with a number of health or care needs, including dementia, and studies have shown that independent living is particularly helpful.

Care can range from personal and night-time care, to medication reminders, shopping, cleaning or companionship.
