The aim is to get NHS staff to get patients out of bed and into their clothes, to prevent chest infections and muscle wastage.

Ward manager Amanda Critchlow said: “By getting up, getting dressed and getting mobile, patients can maintain their normal routine, keep their independence, prevent loss of muscle strength and aerobic function, lower the risk of infection, prevent pressure sores and falls, and reduce the length of time they have to spend in hospital.

“For many, wearing pyjamas reinforces being sick and can prevent recovery. Studies show that three-in- five immobile, older patients in hospital had no medical reason that required bed rest and doubling the amount of walking while in hospital reduces the length of stay.

“If you are visiting a friend or relative in hospital please bring them some clean day clothes. They will also need well-fitting shoes or slippers and any glasses, hearing aids or mobility aids they use.”
