Get ready... it's time to be a superhero for Brian House!

The Blackpool 10k fun run is sponsored by Beaverbrooks and usually raises much-needed funds for Trinity House.

But the decision was made to this year to back sister charity Brian House as part of its 21st anniversary celebrations – and to adopt a superhero theme!

Head of fundraising at the two hospices, Linzi Young (pictured), said: “It’s a huge event and a fantastic way to help celebrate Brian House’s 21st birthday.

“The elite athletes make this a serious race, but crowds always line the Prom to watch the fun runners too. Last year we had some amazing costumes, from hippies to turtles, and even Captain America.

“We hope to see more superheroes this time.

‘The 10K brings hundreds of people into Blackpool for the day and, once again, the generous support of our friends at Beaverbrooks makes it all possible; not forgetting our team of volunteers will be out in force along the course.

“We couldn’t do it without them.”

The start and finish point of the race, on Sunday, May 7, will be at the Savoy Hotel at Gynn Square.

Runners will be given a timing chip so their finishing time is accurate, and will all receive a headband with their entry pack and medal after crossing the finishing line.

The relatively flat course means the run often attracts serious club runners competing for the number one spot and a personal best, but fun runners in fancy dress are a staple sight too.

Last year, around 2,000 people took part, and the race was won by Wesham Road Runners athlete Rob Danson in under 35 minutes.

Entry costs £10.50 for adults and £8.50 for 11 to 15-year-olds.

At any one time, Brian House supports around 80 youngsters with serious life-limiting illnesses but said it faces huge challenges as demand for its services grows.

Last year, it said it received just £195,000 from the NHS towards its £1.3m annual running costs, even though no family is ever charged for using its services.

As well as providing end-of-life care often associated with hospices, it also supports local families through respite care, giving parents a taste of relief and normality.
