Cleveleys Nursing Home on Rossall Road was rated 'inadequate' by the Care Quality Commission following an inspection in December.

The unannounced inspection took place after the authority received concerns about the care of patients and the measures in place to protect people from coronavirus.

Hayley Moore, CQCs interim head of inspection for adult social care said:

“Following this inspection, we have placed Cleveleys Nursing Home in special measures, which means it will be kept under review and it will be re-inspected to check that significant improvements have been made.

“When we carried out this inspection, the home showed infection control was not of a standard for reducing and managing the risk of infection outbreaks. Since our visit, we are aware that the provider has made some improvements including increasing routine cleaning and improving infection control processes.

“The nursing home is required to have a nurse on duty 24 hours a day, we found significant periods where there was not a nurse on duty.

“We are pleased to see that the provider has made some improvements since our inspection and is aware what additional changes need to be made. We will return in due course to ensure the improvements made have been thoroughly embedded.”

The care home was rated inadequate for leadership and safety.

The report ruled that areas of the home were not clean and hygienic on the inspection, which increased the risk of infection outbreaks.

The management team had not assessed risks to minimise the spread of the virus, and the home's infection prevention and control policy gave inaccurate information.

Staff practice was not of a safe standard for reducing and managing the risk of outbreaks.

After the inspection, the provider arranged a deep clean of the home, routine cleaning was increased, and infection control practice improved.
