Bosses at Heyhouses Nursery, in St Annes, are looking to rebuild the centre for toddlers as part of the £4.5m redevelopment of neighbouring Heyhouses CE Primary School.

Plans have now been submitted to Fylde Council for the nursery to have a new single storey building and play areas off Clarendon Road North, to replace the buildings demolished as part of the redevelopment of the primary school.

And the project has been taken on by a local architect, Creative SPARC director Andy Wolfe.

He said: “As an emerging local business we’re very excited and proud to have been chosen to design and deliver the new home for Heyhouses Nursery School. We think it’s a fantastic scheme that will provide a great learning environment for local children to begin their school life.”

For now the nursery has moved into temporary accommodation at the District Scout Headquarters and Activity Centre on Heyhouses Lane, where children are enjoying the great outdoors.

Nursery teacher Joanne Kaced said: “The children are really enjoying the woodland areas and the different sensory experiences.”

The nursery was opened in 1999 in a portable cabin, where it has remained, with just four children, growing to 65, but has always had ambitions to open its own buildings. Chairman of the trustees Helen Atkinson said: “I’m very excited about the next few months and about the long term future of the nursery.”

The new nursery will open alongside the redeveloped primary school buildings in September 2014.
