Students at one of Lancashire’s top schools have released a stunning version of Elton John’s ‘I’m Still Standing’, on the day which should have been the school’s summer concert.

The uplifting video montage was pulled together in just three weeks by 11 to 16-year-olds from the school, despite being on lockdown and studying on their own at home.

And for Lytham St Anne’s High School’s director of music, Nathan Spacey, the result is pretty special.

He said: “Our students were absolutely fantastic and showed real grit and determination, learning the parts in just three weeks. Music teacher Howard Wilson and myself were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm showed by our young musicians who adapted so quickly to a brand new way to create music.

“We can’t underestimate the support and patience from people at home who have had all types of instruments practicing their parts during lockdown. Maybe we also need to thank the neighbours of those families as well!”

The students are not only missing normal school interactions and classes, but after school clubs and creative groups.

The video idea was the brainchild of Year 8 saxophonist Josh, who wanted to collaborate on something with his friends. The electronic version was sent out to the students, who then produced their own video sections, resulting in something the school has never attempted before.

Mr Spacey continued: “Music is such an important part of school life for so many of our students at LSA. Being away from school has meant that a large part of our extra-curricular opportunities have been put on hold. Although students are able to work at home on solo pieces nothing quite beats bringing people together to create something ‘bigger than the sum of its parts’.”

And as adaptability may be the way forward for some time, Mr Spacey says he is proud of the way LSA students and teachers are working: “We know that it will take some time before we can return to safely having a room full of students in an orchestra, choir or any of our ensembles. Until that time we are embracing the new normal and are grateful that technology has allowed us to continue to do what we love.”

Today, Wednesday July 15, the video has been unveiled to the public for the first time, on what would have been one of the highlights of the school year, the summer concert.
