The resort's Sixth Form College has scooped top prize at the annual Teaching Awards.

Blackpool Sixth was named national BTEC College of the Year at the Pearson BTEC Awards. And, two students from the centre won silver awards in recognition of their outstanding achievements on their courses,

Emily Broadbent took the accolade for her hospitality, travel and tourism studies and Skylah Hunt for public services work.

Awards were handed out in 17 categories live on YouTube.

The event was hosted by presenter of the United Stand, YouTube influencer and BTEC Ambassador, Flex, with awards presented by double Olympic gold medallist Max Whitlock as well as actress and former BTEC drama student at The BRIT School, Kellie Shirley.

Blackpool Sixth's work with local employers and the part they play in student learning was singled out for praise by the judging panel.

College principal Jill Gray said : "We are absolutely thrilled that Blackpool Sixth has been recognised by one of the world’s leading awarding organisations, for the outstanding BTEC provision we provide.

She added: "Excellence in all we do is at the heart of the college and this award is a testament to the professionalism and commitment of all the staff at Blackpool Sixth and is shared with our amazing students, past, present and future."

The college provides a wide range of BTEC which can be studied as the main a of a vocational study programme or alongside A level courses as part of a combined programme as well as a Route3 three-year programme for students who need an extra year to reach Level 3.

Cindy Rampersaud, Pearson's senior vice president for BTEC and apprenticeship, said: " I’ve been over-whelmed by the quality of BTEC Award nominations we received and I am delighted to celebrate this year’s winners and the achievements of all learners who will be awarded a BTEC this year.
