A Blackpool college has been handed £1m to help revamp its campuses

A Blackpool college is to get more than £1m for refurbishments under a scheme to fast track improvements.

The college is one of more than 180 nationwide which will receive a share of £200m to begin immediate work from this September to repair and refurbish buildings and campuses so they continue to be great places to learn for the local communities they serve.

Blackpool and the Fylde College will receive £1,020,032 to deliver improvements across its campuses.

The Government said the funding marked a drive to overhaul further education and deliver the skilled workforce employers and the economy need, and that will help level up skills and opportunities for more people across the country.

It is part of a major £1.5bn investment that will transform colleges over the next five years. This initial investment is being fast-tracked so colleges can kick-start work this year and so students and staff will benefit a least a year earlier than originally planned.

Daryl Platt, Blackpool and The Fylde College’s vice principal for engagement, said: “We’re constantly investing in our campuses in order to provide all our learners, with access to industry-standard equipment and facilities to ensure they are well prepared for the workplace.

“These funds are welcome contribution to our estate strategy.”

The move announced by Education Secretary Gavin Williamson was welcomed by Blackpool North and Cleveleys Conservative MP Paul Maynard.

He said: “I value the outstanding education delivered by Blackpool and the Fylde College and know just how important it is for our local community to have such a brilliant education provider right on the doorstep.

“This funding will help ensure the college can carry deliver for students in Blackpool North and Cleveleys right now and well into future. This new funding is a good demonstration of the Government’s levelling up agenda, investing in communities like Blackpool and ensuring every young person, no matter where they come, from has the same opportunities.”
