With a vibrant splash of green, blue and yellow, the new uniforms were designed and made by 11 degree students in just three weeks, then shown off for the first time at a recent open evening.

The students were given a brief to design a treasure box of pieces that could be mixed and matched, with some zany headwear completing the look.

Kathryn Jones, who is studying fashion and costume for performance loved the challenge and said: “Poco Loco translates as a touch of madness so we tried to incorporate this. It was a challenging project, involving late nights with cups of coffee while researching samba bands and carnivals, but the end result was worth it.”

Poco Loco is a community band which performs at a variety of events in Blackpool and across the North-West, including many school and community workshops.

Chairman Phil Harrison added: “We are very grateful to the staff and the students who have done a fantastic job and created a costume that really captures the carnival atmosphere. It is so bright, colourful and a little crazy. It cannot fail to inspire us in our performance and will certainly ensure the band stands out in a crowd.”
