Mariners pub plan for derelict Blackpool site back on the table

Plans to redevelop a former pub site in Blackpool which has stood empty for more than a decade have been resubmitted to the council.

The latest blueprint proposes a mainly three-to-five storey building on land previously occupied by The Mariners bar on Norbreck Road.

It is a resubmission of a scheme put forward in the summer but on which a decision was never made.

The Mariners was partially demolished in 2007 following a fire, with the site being the subject of at least three development plans in the interim years, with none coming to fruition.

The latest proposal is for 34 apartments with parking for 30 vehicles.

A design statement accompanying the application says the building "has been designed to have no overbearing effect on its neighbours, but to achieve enough presence to be a landmark building in its own right".

It adds the existing derelict site has "a severely adverse impact on the visual amenities of the area, including the important approach to the town from the north along Queens Promenade."

If approved by town hall planners, the new designs would contribute to "regenerative efforts to revive this important area of Blackpool which for many acts as a gateway to the resort."

The design statement adds: "This stepped design will ensure that the proposals are compatible with the surroundings.

"It will provide a visual focus in this important location close to the Promenade which is not dominated by the very messy Norbreck Castle Hotel. "

Residents of the area have repeatedly complained about the site being allowed to fall into decline and enforcement action was taken in relation to demolition rubble left on site.

The current owners have removed fly tipping and demolition waste and installed additional security fencing to address the situation ahead of redevelopment of the land.
