International ballerina to start ballet classes for older people in Blackpool
A Blackpool ballet business owner is launching new classes go show you are never too old to dance.
Royal Academy of Dance teacher, Sarnai Byambadorj is encouraging older people to dust off their old pointe shoes or try a plie, pirouette or pas de deux for the first time.
Sarnai’s new venture, Silver Swans, comes on the second anniversary of the launch of her SB Ballet Academy, which began after getting help from Blackpool Council’s Get Started business service.
Her school is based at The Arena, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, where she worked for 17 years as a dancer.
Sarnai was born in Mongolia and trained at the Perm Ballet School, Russia and spent six years as first soloist at the Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet, in Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia.
Then she decided to go solo and eventually took a role at the Pleasure Beach’s Stageworks, Eclipse show where she worked for 10 years.
The Royal Academy of Dance approved teacher, said the new initiative would help older people get out of the house, and become more mobile, making new friends, “something to look forward to other than daily routine”.
She added that they would be surrounded by like-minded people and share the experience.
The Royal Academy of Dance developed this programme based on research into dance practice for older learners – classes are only taught by Silver Swans licensed teachers.
Sarnai said: “Silver Swans classes have been specifically designed for the over-55s, but whatever your age, if you are looking for a new way to keep fit and active, our ballet classes will put a spring in your step.
“Whether you’ve never danced before or want to get back into the swing of it, our classes have something for everyone.
“Thanks to expert support from Blackpool Council’s Get Started team,I have gained vital knowledge as well as the confidence to open my dream business.”
Classes start on February 20, from 10.30am to 11.30am, and then every Thursday at the Arena Pleasure Beach.
