Established store could close with loss of 10 jobs

A SUPERMARKET which has been trading in St Annes for nearly 90 years is under threat.

Booths says it is “considering” closing its store on The Square because it believes it will not remain “economically viable” – meaning a loss of 10 jobs.

The store has been in St Annes since 1924, but bosses feel it might not have a future – partly due to parking restrictions in the town centre and the fact it has two larger nearby supermarkets.

Booths in Lytham opened in 2007 – offering more products, a restaurant and juice bar. And the Ansdell store was expanded in June to include a juice bar and hot food counter, as well as extended opening hours.

David Benson, retail operations director, said: “It’s always deeply regrettable when any decision like this has to be made.

“We’ve made sure all staff have been informed and are currently in a consultation process with them. Only when this has been completed will a final decision be made.

“The two stores within close proximity to St Annes are significantly larger and can offer more facilities.

“This, along with restricted parking outside St Annes, has led us to consider closing the smaller store.”

John Moxham, from the St Annes Chamber of Trade, said he was not surprised.

He added: “It’s sad as Booths has been in St Annes for 86 years and it is a shame, but it’s a sign of the times.

“Obviously it has not been fulfilling what the market wants. There are also Sainsburys and Marks and Spencers food stores in St Annes.”
