‘We must invest in history’

Looking out from the Opera House stage, in the weeks after it hosted Queen Elizabeth at the 2009 Royal Variety Performance, rockers Status Quo expected to see a difference in the iconic venue.

Quo frontman Francis Rossi, ahead of their return to the Winter Gardens on Saturday, recalled: “We went there not long after the Royal Variety Performance [in 2009], we were coming back and thinking it would be so much better after the Queen having been there,” he said.

“But doing the sound check we were looking out and could see there were two seats had been replaced in the balcony and that was it - where the Queen sat.

“It’s an issue in this country, we have these fabulous theatres which we need to invest in.

“But that’s an issue in Blackpool too. The town needs investing in.

“It’s fantastic with a fantastic history which we should treasure and take care of.”

They set off on their latest UK tour from the resort on Saturday, returning to their pure rock roots after the recent Aquostic outings.
