‘There’s nowhere else quite like Blackpool’ says top DJ Judge Jules

World-renowned DJ Judge Jules returns to the “mecca” that is Blackpool this weekend.

The former world number one DJ, who has been playing since 1987, plays at Flamingo Nightclub this Saturday.

It’s one of a number of sets played across the resort in recent years, including Club Domain last summer and playing on North Pier in 2013 - the Londoner loves this seaside town.

He said: “There’s nowhere else like it.

“As well as a decent population of people who like to party, Blackpool’s a mecca for people from all over, it makes it totally unique.”

And Blackpool’s own DJ Danny Howard now counts him as a friend and manager.

Danny’s rise to stardom through Radio One is similar to that of Judge Jules’ own history, having hosted a Saturday night slot on the station for 10 years from 1997 after cutting his teeth on pirate radio.

He said: “Danny winning the Radio One competition was a bit like winning the golden ticket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

“But he’s come through on pure talent since - winning a competition only takes you so far.

“I’ve always supported younger talent and I revel in his example as he’s grown.”

Despite the likes of Danny rising through the ranks of the DJ circuit, Jules has maintained his top spot. This Blackpool show comes off the back of his Judge Won’t Budge tour.

These days things are somewhat quieter for the 48-year-old - his ‘9-5’ is as a music lawyer - if playing the Netherlands, Egypt, South Africa, Finland and Dublin this summer, on top of an Ibiza residency can be considered quiet.

And he’s in the enviable position of being able to pick and choose where he plays, which, he said, means he can revert back to the DJ of old - playing simply for the joy of it.

“My DJing has continued to go exceptionally well,” he said.

“I spent years touring the globe and while the lifestyle is great you don’t want to do it forever, it’s done at a selective pace now.

“It might make me a better DJ because it makes you hone in on sets, you never play the same set twice.”

Jules starts his Ibiza residency again this Friday - Judgement Fridays returns for its 15th year at Eden, San Antonio - but he’s not fearing a culture shock from bouncing between a party island on Friday night to a party town on Saturday.

“It’s an ideal weekend,” he said.
