The ultimate al fresco theatrical treat brings The Hobbit to our own fair Shire for high summer. Bilbo and the boys take family theatre goers on a dramatic and epic walkabout across the picturesque parkland of Lancaster’s Williamson Park. It steals a march on the 80th anniversary of Tolkien’s fantastic adventure - coming up next year - within the very county said to have inspired the yarn.

The promenade performances of The Hobbit run from July 5 to August 13 in a park previously transformed for promenaders into Neverland, Oz, and Ancient Greece.

The award winning Dukes Theatre has attracted more than 500,000 people to its outdoor productions since 1987.

Andy Serkis, who starred as Gollum in the blockbuster movies, started his acting career there, and appeared in the very first promenade production. Josie Cerise plays Gollum this time out.

The woodlands and parkland pathways are a great setting for Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf and sundry ethereal creations. Artistic director Joe Sumsion admits: “I feel like the park chose The Hobbit. It’s the natural environment for it.”
