And this year Great Eccleston Tractor Pulling Championships – where the top teams compete with more than 9,000 horsepower – pulled in the spectators for another weekend of spectacular entertainment.

Organised by the North West Tractor Pulling Club, the event took place at a purpose-built track on Saturday and Sunday.

“We had the big live screens, they are a new addition this year. There were probably 10,000 people on the embankment on Saturday night.”

She added: “We had 10 invited guests from Holland and one from Germany. One of our English teams lost both its front wheels. It got too high on the track and landed too high. The engine blew up.

“Two of the methanol tractors kept the crowds entertained. Some of the methanol was burning off on the engine which looked good in the night.”

The event, which has attracted a number of new sponsors this year, and trialed some new ideas, will host the European championships next year.
