The Grand Theatre’s popular play reading group The Play’s The Thing meets for the first time in 2012 next Saturday, January 14, to read the winning plays from Grand Words 2011.

From 1.30pm the play reading group will be reading through the winning and highly commended plays from the Grand Theatre’s writing competition.

Nostalgia Street, a comedy by Carole Gray, won this year’s competition while Zoe Lamond’s comedy drama Bob and Malcolm was highly commended.

The Play’s The Thing takes place every second Saturday of the month at Blackpool Grand Theatre.

It is intended for adults who have an interest in play reading and theatre – and guarantees a warm welcome and a lively discussion, with no acting experience or speaking ability required.

The play reading group is led by Jennifer Smethurst and Grand Theatre Archivist Linda Tolson MBE.

Jennifer also runs Act One Drama Studio and is a qualified drama and speech instructor with many years of experience in the performing arts. For many years she has helped young people and adults gain their LAMDA awards.

Grand Words, run by Blackpool’s Grand Theatre and Stage Write (Blackpool’s Writing for Performance Network), offers North West writers the chance to have their one-act plays performed at the Lawrence House Studio. Carole Gray’s winning play, Nostalgia Street will be performed in the Lawrence House Studio at Easter when Grand Words 2012 is launched.

If you would like to join the play-reading group tickets are £3 which includes tea and biscuits. Tickets can be purchased prior to the event by calling (01253) 743339 or on the day at the box office.
