Soul superstars The Stylistics are returning to Blackpool with a headlining concert at North Pier Theatre in November.
The four-piece soul sensations are still as strong and smooth as they were when the group made it big in the early ’70s and still boasts two original members, Airrion Love and Herb Murrell ,along with later additions Eban Brown and Jason Sharp.
The Stylistics formed in 1968, when members of two Philadelphia soul groups The Monarchs and The Percussions joined forces. In 1970, the group recorded and released the single You’re a Big Girl Now, which became a regional hit for the small record label Sebring Records. The larger Avco Records soon signed them and the single climbed to number seven in early 1971.
Once signed to the larger label, The Stylistics began working with producer/songwriter Thom Bell, who had previously worked with groups such as The Delfonics. Every single that Bell produced for The Stylistics became a top ten R&B hit, and several made it into the top ten mainstream charts including You Are Everything, Betcha By Golly Wow, I’m Stone in Love With You, Break Up to Make Up, and You Make Me Feel Brand New.
In 1974 The Stylistics adapted their style to a more softer, easy listening style, changed record label and became popular throughout Europe and in particular the UK and in ’75 had three top five hits with Sing Baby Sing, Na Na Is The Saddest Word, Can’t Give You Anything and again made it into the top five the following year with Can’t Help Falling In Love.
The Stylistics have continued to tour and record right up the present day. Their most recent album That Same Way, released in 2010, gave them another top five hit.
The Stylistics will be in concert at Blackpool North Pier Theatre on Thursday November 1 at 7.30pm.
Tickets are priced £22.50 and are available from the North Pier box office, call (01253) 623304, or visit www.northpierblackpool.co.uk.
