A husband will relive the bittersweet joy of his wedding day on national television - after losing his bride to cancer just days later.

Dean Jackson was filmed for ITV programme Real Stories With Ranvir Singh to tell the tale of losing his beloved partner Dawn to cancer within just 18 days of diagnosis.

Three days before her death, the Fleetwood mother-of-two was able to wed her partner of eight years while being cared for at Trinity Hospice, Bispham.

Their dream day was made possible by charity Gift Of A Wedding and the generosity of strangers who donated everything from a dress and rings to cake and flowers.

The widower, 36, said being filmed for the programme, and meeting the people who made the wedding day so special, was helpful for his grieving process.

Mr Jackson said: “Talking to ITV helped me in two ways; it gave me chance to thank those people who helped make our wedding day happen – I know that’s what Dawn would have wanted.

“And it was good to be able to talk about what has happened – that really took a weight from my shoulders.”

Mr and Mrs Jackson married on May 1 this year, having been granted an emergency licence when Dawn Jackson, nee Lilley, was told she had just days to live.

In the early hours of May 4 Dawn died, after cancer attacked her liver, spleen and bowel.

On April 17, Dawn, who had worked as a carer, had been admitted to Blackpool Victoria Hospital after collapsing at their family home.

Here medics dealt the devastating news she had terminal liver cancer that had spread to her bowel and spleen.

Tragically, just a month earlier, Dawn had lost a baby at eight months pregnant, Jaycee May.

She would have been the couple’s fourth child, along with Karla, now two,
four-year-old Aydia and Joshua, 10.

Determined to make the final few days of his sweetheart’s life happy, as well as comfortable, Mr Jackson bought a ring and proposed to the mother of his daughters.

On April 28 she was admitted to Trinity Hospice for end-of-life care and family members set about organising her special wedding day.

The wedding day was organised by Gift Of A Wedding, who rallied everyone from florists and cake bakers to people willing to donate their wedding clothing in order to make the Jackson’s big day happen.

Mr Jackson added: “It was just overwhelming to be able to have a lovely wedding was a dream come true at such a desperate time.”

> Real Stories With Ranvir Singh – a past student of Kirkham Grammar School – airs on ITV1 on Thursdays at 7.30pm.
