Mysterious plans to bring an outdoor drive-in cinema to Blackpool have been announced.
An organisation calling itself Blackpool Outdoor Cinema claims to have secured a location for the drive-in and says it will begin screening films for three nights from October 25 to 27.
However, no further details have yet to be announced and Blackpool Council says it has not received any planning or licence applications for such a venture.
A spokesperson for the cinema, known only as Fiona, told The Gazette: “It’s something completely different.
“There’s a lot of interest locally and interest from out of town. We have no plans to do it permanently but if this all goes according to schedule we will do it again at set times during the year.”
Despite being pressed for further detail, she would not reveal the location.
The organisation has built up a presence on social networking sites Facebook and Twitter since mid August, with almost 4,500 people across the resort following its progress.
A statement on the group’s Facebook page said: “The location has been secured and the venue will shortly be released on our page.
“Without the support of local people this venture wouldn’t be possible and we ask that people can help spread the word through any channel they can.
“The drive in cinema will be here for three days in October with the view to having plenty of dates in 2014.”
The organisation has also run polls on its site urging film fans to vote for the movies they would like to see during the supposed three day screening.
Respondents have replied with suggestions such as Grease and Back To The Future, while some have commented on the feasibility of the plan.
Katy Segal said: “I know the actual films haven’t been announced yet but how come you won’t even just announce where it will be exactly?”
“It can’t be that much of a secret surely.”
