Blackpool has been awarded its own Blue Peter badge for providing great locations for an upcoming children’s TV show.

Film crews from the BBC were in town yesterday filming scenes for a new show searching for the next presenter of the world’s longest running children’s show, to be called Blue Peter - You Decide!

In a first for Blue Peter the next new presenter will be chosen after competing in a series of challenges-based heats to reach the final where the winner will be chosen by the CBBC audience.

The winner will then join Blackpool’s own Barney Harwood and Helen Skelton to present the show.

Competitors for the much coveted role took part in tasks at some of Blackpool most famous landmarks as part of filming for the programme yesterday.

Darrell Olsen, executive producer of Blue Peter – You Decide! said: “We had an amazing day in Blackpool filming a challenge with the aspiring Blue Peter presenters and Dick and Dom.”

The group, along with the popular children’s presenters Dick and Dom, visited the Comedy Carpet, Blackpool beach, Blackpool Tower and the Pleasure Beach on a whistle stop tour of the resort.

Darrell added: “There are lots of great locations that make Blackpool a brilliant place to film and we hope local people will enjoy watching the show when it goes out on air next month.”

Blackpool Tower general manager Kate Shane confirmed the contestants and crew were visiting the Tower Eye and Tower Circus to take part in a task yesterday.

She said: “We welcome any television company that’s going to show Blackpool Tower in its true light as a family attraction.”

Blue Peter – You Decide! will be airing on CBBC this summer, with viewers able to vote for their favourite of the possible presenters.
