The Comedy Club is testing a new stand-up night in Blackpool, which – if it’s a success – could become a regular thing next year.
Taking place at Club Sanuk on Friday, it will feature three top comics from around the UK.
Blackpool has for a long while had a dearth of good comedy nights.
Ryan Gleeson runs an excellent monthly night at Viva in the town centre, while Phil Walker’s Woofers club has a big following at Lytham Cricket Club.
But that’s about it, which is why Dave Pope at Sanuk thinks there is room for another.
“If you go to Manchester there are quite a few comedy clubs and stand-up shows on any give night which are sold out,” said Dave.
“We think Blackpool is a great place to have comedy nights and we’re pretty excited to team up with the official Comedy Club because it’s the first time they have ever done a night in Blackpool.
“They are such a widely recognised brand and have a great reputation so it is exciting to be working with them and we’re proud we’re the venue they want to work with.
“People might think Sanuk doing comedy is odd but I think it will work well because it is going to be a proper top class night.
“The first night on Friday is a bit of a trial and if it’s a success we hope this will become a regular thing next year.”
The three comics booked for Friday are Karen Bayley, John Newton and Gerry K.
Bayley has her own comedy club in the Midlands and has gained glowing reviews for shows at the Edinburgh Festival. Newton has performed throughout the world and is renowned for leading the audience on bizarre whimsical journeys, such as discussing the socio-economic stability of Thomas the Tank Engine’s island home.
Headliner Gerry K has performed at all the top comedy clubs and won various awards. He’s also a bit of an actor too, appearing in The Bill.
The show, which is for over 18s only, starts at 8pm on Friday. Tickets from the venue on (01253) 292900.
