Its creator Mark is celebrated internationally for his ‘genre-defying’ shows combining his skills as a writer, director, designer, filmmaker and choreographer, and marking his return to the stage for the first time in 10 years.

The action-packed work is set in the mind of a woman in a medically-induced coma, and through the use of projection, aerial choreography, special effects and edge-of-the-seat storytelling it creates a show described as ‘both psychological thriller and heart-rending, medical drama.’

Mark said: “It started six years ago with the first stirrings of an idea. I’ve been making theatre for almost 30 years and it’s a culmination of everything I’ve done, all added up and put into one show.

“The basic idea, like a lot of my work, is putting characters into places where they have an altered time scale or the luxury of being able to visit the past or change events that have already happened.”

Out Of This World has been researched with medical experts, with a development period that has taken Mark from a neurosurgical operating room to aerial rehearsal rooms in Buenos Aires.

“The heroine Ellen is not only the main character but, intriguingly, also the location for the show – as much of the action takes place deep within her injured brain,” Mark added.

“It can be a playful place although often it is terrifying, and ultimately it is revelatory.

“On the surface Ellen looks completely serene and asleep, like nothing’s going on, but battles are being fought below the surface - it’s like an action movie down there for her.

“What lies at the centre of it is an incredibly moving love story. She’s trying to find someone who’s missing, she finds them and saves them. She’s saving herself and the man she loves - but can she have both?

“The piece has been designed to grab people by the eyeballs and drag them into the story, but there’s been a lot of tears, which has been interesting.”
