Flaming knives soaring inches from your face isn’t everyone’s idea of a fun Friday night.

But it’s something Jennifer Potter will need to get used to in her glamourous new career.

The 22-year-old, from central Blackpool, proved she had nerves of steel to beat off the competition and claim the death-defying role of knife-thrower’s assistant in this year’s Circus of Horrors.

The show – created by Preston born Dr Haze – was in town yesterday to audition wannabe target girls and boys to take part in its three-night Pleasure Beach run, which kicks off tomorrow.

Dr Haze, the circus’ undead ringmaster, said: “The normal knife thrower’s assistant is pregnant and we’ve got another girl who can start Sunday, but we needed someone for the three Blackpool shows.

“If they’re good we will give them a more permanent job. Jennifer looks good which is important and she’s had aerial experience, and you need to have confidence for that.

“She’ll be in the show tomorrow night and I hope we can expand on that.”

And Miss Potter, whose day job is one of the park’s ride photographers, said: “I’m really excited I’ve got the job, I can’t believe it.

“It will be a challenge but I’m looking forward to it.”

From tomorrow night she’ll be at the mercy of expert knife-thrower Psycho Sean on stage at the Globe – who hopes to set fire to his knives and throw them much closer than in practice.

He said: “When you’re breaking somebody in you have to start carefully.

“It’s quite a nervous thing so we need a girl with a lot of confidence.”

The adult circus is on tomorrow and Friday at 8pm and Saturday at 5pm and 8pm.
