Paul Merton, Omid Djalili, and Mark Watson are among the comic superstars heading to Blackpool for this year’s two-night festival of fun Comedy Carpet Live.

The Have I Got News for you regular will take over the Opera House on July 28 for a silent movie extravaganza called Silent Clowns.

Backed by a live orchestra comedy legend Merton will share his passion for the early black and white gems of Harold Lloyd, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Laurel and Hardy.

The previous night funny man Omid Djalili is set to headline the Winter Gardens Opera House supported by stand-up Mark Watson, Scottish comedian Daniel Sloss and Radio 2 Comedy Awards winner Lucy Beaumont.

Paul said: “I have a great fondness for Blackpool and with the town’s rich history of comedy, it is appropriate that we will screen one of the best silent movies as part of the Comedy Carpet Live Festival at the end of July.

“I will be presenting “Safety Last” starring Harold Lloyd, where he dangles from the clock handles at the top of a skyscraper, and featuring a band of skilled musicians who are able to improvise together to help create a magnificent atmosphere in the Opera House Theatre.

“Audiences will experience seeing Harold Lloyd deliver a masterclass in visual comedy as it was first presented in cinemas in 1923.”

Djalili is also relishing the opportunity of visiting
Blackpool again and said: “This will be a welcome return to Blackpool and I am honoured to learn that my name has been included on the wonderful Comedy Carpet public work of art in front of The Tower alongside so many comedy legends.”

Chris Pope, Events Organiser at Marketing Blackpool, said: “We have moved this year’s event to the end of July as most of the acts involved will be appearing at the Edinburgh Fringe just a few days later and Blackpool provides the perfect ground for them ahead of that.”

Comedy Carpet Live 2013 runs over Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28.
