The arrival of The Twits on Bank Holiday Sunday afternoon will round off a successful outdoor theatre season at Lytham Hall.
Unpredictable weather has made for a roller-coaster ride for potential audiences, but advance bookings for Illyria’s production of the Roald Dahl children’s favourite on August 26 at 4pm are already running at a high level
The early decision to move the first open air play of the season, Emma by Chapterhouse Theatre, to Lytham’s King Edward and Queen Mary School, was vindicated by a record attendance.
The presence of St. Annes–born James Dangerfield in the title role of Shakespeare’s Henry V helped to increase numbers for Illyria’s production in a gloomy early July and a glorious evening 10 days later saw Illyria attract the biggest audience of their tour, 350, for their performance of HMS Pinafore.
Open air theatre organiser Julian Wilde is happy with the season so far and feels Fylde coast audiences have responded well.
“It’s been a picnic hamper and poncho summer, but I have been delighted with the numbers attending, particularly all the walk-ups for HMS Pinafore,” he said. “All the shows have been very well received.”
The grotesque characters in The Twits are proving a particular attraction for children throughout the country on Illyria’s marathon 85 date tour.
Actress Lizzy Dive, one of a cast of six, believes that Illyria’s artistic director Oliver Gray deserves much credit for the success of the tour.
“This is the third outdoor Roald Dahl show I have been in for Illyria and it’s hugely enjoyable for the cast and for the audience alike,” she said. “Dahl specialises in portraying really gruesome adults and Oliver Gray’s comic touches are superb. The children at Lytham Hall will simply lap it up.”
