Dancing Queen - Grand Theatre, Blackpool
ABBA never played Blackpool themselves but they are here in spirit every Tuesday this summer.
Dancing Queen doesn’t let down on its promise of a fab night out, combining 70s classics and a Grease medley with the timeless tunes of the Swedish sequinned supergroup.
Don’t be deterred if the first half Boogie Wonderland of disco hits and ‘summer nights’ tribute special doesn’t rouse as much as hoped. It’s still difficult not to be dancing before curtain goes up on the second half ready for back to back covers of the pop royalty.
The four performers and their backing musicians settle into their ABBA personas and outfits comfortably. Even if the accents suggest they’ve recently done a run in Wales, rather than flown direct from Sweden. Though not full the Grand was alive with cheer – all ages singing, clapping and dancing along.
Audience participation is The Name of the Game as everyone is invited to Take a Chance and join in with the routines.
Some of the Dancing Queens resorted to ditching high heels in favour of a boogie, and the only downside was wishing more had donned flares for the occasion as well. Mamma Mia it is not, but what’s not to love about crushed velvet, sequins and two hours of non-stop 70s and ABBA hits?
