John Barrowman - Blackpool Opera House
GETTING the audience expelling “sparkles” was the aim of John Barrowman as he lit the stage with sequins at Blackpool Opera House.
The uber camp singing star was in fine voice as he led a cast of his friends and even family on a two hour musical romp.
Cheese was the definite flavour of the night with a brief foray into disco, Disney musicals and even the delights of the Eurovision Song Contest.
It had backing dancers in gold hot pants and Baywatch swimwear – and even the singer’s parents – who are in their 70s – pulled on saucy role play outfits to join in with a rousing version of gay/party anthem YMCA.
Covers of Barry Manilow and Katy Perry – as well as songs from his own album were served up with a dazzling mega watt style. Photographs of his family, video clips from his TV series Torchwood and Tonight’s The Night also added to the entertainment along with countless saucy jokes.
He was joined on stage by Blackpool singing star and tv celebrity Jodie Prenger who was also in fine voice as she belted out a few numbers on her own.
She also duetted with Barrowman and gave a swing rendition of Rhianna’s hit, Umbrella plus a beautiful version of Sting’s Field Of Gold.
The star himself was on humble form and repeatedly thanked his fans for their on-going support – he had even penned a song to them, suitably titled I Owe It All To You.
And it seemed the self styled “Team Barrowman”, clutching glossy souvenir programmes and wearing hastily donned tour T shirts, simply couldn’t get enough.
