The show’s not over until the fat ladies have danced.
Circus impresario Gerry Cottle is searching for larger than life talent, both in looks and personality, to form a 2012 version of the much loved beefy comedy dance troupe the Roly Polys.
He wants the ensemble to follow in the weighty footsteps of the dance company created by late comedian Les Dawson who went onto international stardom.
Once choreographed, they will appear in his latest circus production, Wow!, which is being staged in The Globe Theatre at Blackpool Pleasure Beach until November 3.
Gerry says the new troupe, to be called the Jumbo Jets and fronted by Wow! cast member, singer and clown Olympia Konyot (right), will be a “new rock ‘n’ roll Roly Polys” and is looking for size 20 and above ladies.
The advertisement for the dancers will be placed in local job centres states with auditions taking place on Tuesday, October 9, at 11am in the Globe Theatre with successful candidates going into rehearsals from Monday to Saturday, October 15 to 20 ready for initial twice a day performances from Monday October 22 to Saturday November 3.
Multi dance skills will be required (tap, can can, splits and perhaps acrobatics) and suitable clothing will be needed for rehearsals but, says Gerry, “personality will be your most important asset.”
He added: “I have always been a huge fan of variety acts, the more bizarre the better, and I was really sad when the Roly Polys stopped performing.
“I invited former ‘Poly’ Sandy Griffiths to see the show and she loved it.
“After discussing the demise of the Roly Polys she suggested we formed a new version of the act and call it the Jumbo Jets, a sort of Roly Polys meet the Rockettes. It will be the perfect act for our show.
“I simply can’t wait for the auditions.”
