The BBC Philharmonic has teamed up with Guy Barker’s Jazz Orchestra for a concerto in Blackpool later this month.

Following the success of the inaugural BBC Philharmonic Presents festival in 2011, the orchestras will perform a specially arranged suite from Miles Davis’ legendary record Kind of Blue, possibly the best-selling jazz albums of all time.

One of Britain’s greatest jazz musicians, composer, arranger and conductor, Guy will be creating an evening of music from the late great jazzman to be broadcast live from the Blackpool Tower Ballroom.

Having previously joined forces with Richard Hawley, The XX, and performed a night inspired by James Bond, this collaboration is aimed at showing off the versatility and skill of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, whilst also illustrating why Guy is one of Britain’s greatest arrangers and composers working today.

As a trumpet player he has performed with many great artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Gil Evans, Quincy Jones, Frank Sinatra, Sting and Lena Horne.

His composing and arranging credits include The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Jamie Cullum and Paloma Faith, plus many large orchestral projects for the BBC and the London Jazz Festival.

He has also composed music for films including The Talented Mr Ripley and The Number One Ladies Detective Agency. Two of his solo albums were nominated for the Mercury Music Prize.

His most recent project, the Spirit of Django Orchestral Suite, which Guy composed, arranged and conducted at this year’s BBC Proms, received a rapturous reception.

Richard Wigley, general manager of the BBC Philharmonic, said: “The return of BBC Philharmonic Presents is an irresistible mixture of collaborations with Britain’s finest artists and producers. With the full symphonic power of 90 professional musicians, this is a unique opportunity to bring the highest standard of music making to new audiences in collaboration with the BBC’s national radio networks and BBC North.”
