Rock band The Script were today named as headliners for this year’s Illuminations Switch-On party.

The Irish chart-toppers – whose frontman is Danny O’Donoghue from TV’s The Voice – will take to the stage for a full hour and a half gig on Friday, August 30 before the Lights are turned on.

Last year's switch-on stars British Olympic heroes Karina Bryon, Max Whitlock, Sophie Hasking, Steven Burke, Beth Tweddle and Luke Campbell turning on last year's Lights.

The name of the celebrity who will actually flick the switch to turn on the Lights is still to be revealed, but tourism bosses today said they were delighted to confirm this year’s event on Tower Festival Headland will be held over two nights rather than the usual one.

It is also the first time the Switch-On event has been a paid for event with tickets for The Script, special guest Eliza Doolittle and the Switch-On itself priced at £34.

Tickets go on sale on Friday.

The acts to appear on the Saturday night slot are still to be confirmed.

Natalie Wyatt, Managing Director of Marketing Blackpool, said: “We are delighted to be announcing The Script as our headline act.

“Their popularity is immense and they have a really wide appeal so we hope to see many families enjoying Blackpool’s biggest night of the year.”

On the issue of an admission price for the first time, Ms Wyatt added: “We have been making changes to the Switch-On event for the last couple of years.

“We stated in 2012 that it was our intention to charge for tickets after last year’s centenary event. To do this we have created something completely different to what we have delivered in the past.”
