Just days before the summer version of top tribute show Legends ends its 2012 run on Central Pier, the Christmas edition has been cancelled.
Michael Williams, operations director for Six Piers (which runs Central and South Piers) and Crown Entertainment Centres which operates the Winter Gardens said: “It has been difficult to attract an audience. This was to have the second year of the Christmas edition and it’s the type of show that requires high numbers in the audience to create the required atmosphere.”
He added that it has been “a very difficult decision” to call the show off “but advance sales were behind where we were at this time last year despite carrying out additional marketing.”
The show was to have been staged on 12 nights between December 7 and 29 with tributes to Shirley Bassey, Buddy Holly, Neil Diamond and Michael Jackson
“There are a lot of established Christmas party nights in Blackpool and it is has proved a hard market for something new to crack,” said Mr Williams. “We decided to make the decision – difficult though it was – in plenty of time for people to who had booked to receive refunds and if necessary make alternative plans for their Christmas party nights.”
He added: “I think the economic climate has also played a part and I know of some other operators who have cut back on the number of nights they are holding.”
Producer and director of Legends, Trevor Chance said: “We are very disappointed at the Christmas cancellations and for letting down our faithful fans.
“Legends cast and crew have been understanding and supportive as always, and we look forward to 2013 being another bumper year.”
Michael Williams added that the decision to pull the plugs should have no effect on next summer’s production.
“We are already in discussions with Brenda and Trevor Chance from Chance Promotions about next summer’s season on Central Pier,” he said.
