In its opening weekend at the cinemas in 1978, Grease grossed a whopping £9m.
Mind you, even that wasn’t enough to make it biggest earner – Jaws 2 proving more popular.
But Grease was a massive success and has retained its popularity ever since – even primary school kids can tell you the movie starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John and spurned hits like Summer Nights and You’re The One That I Want.
If you are one of those folk who loved it and still do, then it might be worth heading to The Grand this weekend.
The Theatre is playing host to Sing-a-Long-a Grease.
It’s an interactive show with the audience able to participate and sing-a-long with the T-Birds and Pink Ladies.
It is in Blackpool as part of a 80-venue tour of the UK blends the original movie with an exhilarating theatrical experience, returning the story of the two high school lovers to its origins as a stage show.
With on-screen lyrics, audiences can sing along to the film’s classic soundtrack popularised by Danny, Sandy and the gang and each show has a Sing-a-Long-a host who will hand out goodie bags, guide everyone through vocal warm-ups and essential dance moves such as the hand-jive, as well as teach audiences when to heckle.
There’s also a chance to enter the fancy dress competition – which means leather jackets, pink wigs and sunglasses are a must.
So put it this way, if you’re the type who hates standing up in a theatre and joining in – ie. me – then it’s not for you.
Sing-a-Long Grease is at the Grand at 7.30pm on Saturday. Tickets priced £16.50 are available from www.blackpoolgrand.co.uk or the box office on 01253 743339.
