Christmas is coming extra early for theatre lovers as the Opera House today announces a festive treat – for 2015.

Tickets go on sale at 10am for a musical version of A Christmas Carol, with stage and screen star Paul Nicholas to head the cast as Ebenezer Scrooge, for a month-long run at the Winter Gardens theatre from Friday, December 4 next year.

And anyone booking their tickets before Wednesday, December 31, can take advantage of a special early bird deal of just £25 for adults and £15 for children.

The show will see a welcome return to the resort by Just Good Friends star Nicholas, who launched his national children’s theatre school franchise from Thornton Little Theatre in 2006.

A Christmas Carol, a firm family favourite for the festive period, is the latest addition to the 2015 programme at the Opera House, with further announcements due in coming weeks.

The Charles Dickens’ classic tale had the full Broadway treatment by the creative team of Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid) Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime, Seussical) and Mike Okrent (Crazy for You, Me And My Girl) behind its 1994 premiere - hailed as ‘a tonic for adults’ and ‘a transfixing journey’ for children by the New York Times, as the show spent a spectacular 10 seasons at the city’s Madison Square Garden.

Winter Gardens managing director Michael Williams said: “We are looking forward to working with producer Peter Frosdick on his adaptation of this classic heart-warming story and believe it will add to the fantastic mix of entertainment Blackpool has to offer every festive season.”

Musical lovers will be in for a stage treat, with ‘falling snow, exuberant dance sequences and magnificent sets’ recreating the Dickensian London landscape for audiences of all ages.

In addition to his TV roles and theatre schools, Nicholas is a celebrated stage star - originating lead roles of Rum Tum Tugger in Cats and Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, and being one half of the first British couple to play Danny and Sandy in Grease alongside Elaine Paige.

He’s won a BAFTA nomination, four appearances on the Royal Variety Show and a string of UK and worldwide his singles.

Coun Graham Cain, Blackpool Council cabinet member for tourism and leisure, added: “We are thrilled to announce A Christmas Carol will be coming to the Blackpool Opera House for the Festive Season in 2015 and will further compliment what we have already announced and will announce in the coming weeks.”
