Blackpool’s most flamboyant and fabulous night out is set to host a series of celebrations to mark its 20th birthday this summer.
Funny Girls showbar is promising glitz and glamour to celebrate two decades that have seen it change the face of showbusiness in the resort.
The concept burst on to Blackpool’s nightlife scene back in July 1994, in its original venue at the promenade end of Queen Street.
In its first few years alone it expanded across a number of shop fronts on the street and established the area as the place for the town’s nightlife economy, before moving into the iconic former Odeon cinema venue on Dickson Road.
Since, it has cemented its place and has seen its performers break leg kicking and back flipping dance routines records.
Founder Basil Newby said he is thrilled to be marking the anniversary just months after being awarded an MBE for his services to business and the resort’s gay community.
He added: “I am so grateful to the people of Blackpool and the theatrical community who have so warmly taken Funny Girls into their hearts and helped put both Funny Girls, and Blackpool, firmly on the esteemed global show business map.
“The venue has reached iconic status, thanks to the thousands of visitors from all over the UK and around the world who rave about the unique Funny Girls experience.
“This amazing support and positive word of mouth buzz continues to grow to this day.
“We are going to mark our 20th anniversary birthday in glorious style and we will continue the celebrations throughout the summer with a series of high profile special events and charity nights not to be missed.”
The 20th birthday party on Friday, July 4, will host a Funny Girls reunion as well as show off the venue’s new summer show, taking audiences on a journey of the best loved musical numbers and routines performed by the Girls over the last 20 years, even welcoming back some of the first ever Girls for one night only.
