When you think about it, there aren’t too many female magicians around.
Which is what makes the exotically named Romany Diva of Magic a bit different to the norm.
One of only 80 female magicians among the 1500-strong membership of the Magic Circle, Romany has been awarded a Gold Star by the organisation and collected a wealth of other accolades during her career.
And now she’s in Blackpool, one of the star performers at this year’s Showzam festival – a 10-day celebration of magic, circus and variety taking place across the town.
A sparkling entertainer in burlesque sequins and feathers, Romany is performing her family-friendly magic show at The Sands every night until Saturday.
“Blackpool is blessed with some of the UK’s best venues, which always attract top quality acts,” says Romany, who will be bringing her act to town for Showzam for the fifth successive year.
“When you add Showzam into that mix, the town lights up even more brightly.
“I love this festival because it has such an original and exciting collection of artists.
“It attracts audiences of all ages and with such a special range of performances on offer, in my opinion it is an astonishing festival that just gets better every year.”
Romany seems to lead quite a pleasant life -– she’s just returned from an exotic 12-day cruise from Lima in Peru to Tahiti, via the Pacific Ocean’s Easter Island.
“For the past year I’ve been playing this show all over the world in 1,000-seat theatres on cruise ships,” she said.
“But these Showzam performances in Blackpool are an opportunity to perform my magic up close.
“This is a show full of beautiful, visual magic, plenty of comedy and a big dash of mystery. I promise people they won’t believe their eyes.”
No stranger to Showzam audiences, Romany has previously compered the festival’s popular Carnival Ball in The Tower Ballroom.
Tickets priced £15 for her show at The Sands – which stars at 7.30pm each night – are available from www.showzam.co.uk or by calling 01253 625262.
