Fleetwood’s first alternative comedy night starts next month.
Hosted by local entertainer and DJ Darren Nelson (pictured below), Stand Up... On The Wyre is being launched at the Wyre Light, London Street on Tuesday, September 6.
Headlining will be Blackpool-based funnyman Greg Cook. “I was asked if I could organise a comedy night at the venue and as far as I know Fleetwood has never had an alternative comedy night before,” said Darren, who in the 80’s and 90’s was one of the area’s top club DJs and appeared regularly on national TV shows, including writing and performing comedy sketches on ITV’S Hotshots series.
He was also the first comic to host an alternative comedy night on the Fylde coast and was a finalist on ITV’S comedy search show Take the Mike.
He also hosted a comedy night in Preston, where his last headlining act was the now arena filling Liverpool comedian John Bishop .
“I got to work ringing a few top acts and I am delighted that local funnyman Greg Cook has agreed to headline the first event,” said Darren, a former vice chair of Blackpool actors Equity union who also works as a showbusiness and celebrity photographer.
He can also still be found at Cube in Poulton where he has been the resident DJ for the past few years.
Wyrelight manager Stuart Culley, who has been at the Barracuda chain venue for just over a year, said on comedy nights freshly prepared finger food will be available before the show and during the interval.
Admission on the door will be £3 or £2 in advance from the pub or via firstname.lastname@example.org
