A Blackpool Grand Theatre pantomime star is currently featuring in a new Channel 4 fly-on-the-wall documentary series.
Jamie John, (right), who is set to appear in the Grand Theatre’s forthcoming pantomime Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, features in the seven part series (called Seven Dwarves) which has its second part screened tonight.
The series follows the lives of seven dwarf actors as they live together and perform in a production of Snow White. Jamie is featured throughout the series.
Produced by the BAFTA award-winning company behind One Born Every Minute and 24 Hours in A&E, Seven Dwarfs gives viewers an insight into the personal and professional lives of the dwarfs cast in a 2010 production of Snow White and aims to dispel some of the preconceptions that small people can encounter.
Twenty two year old Jamie, who made his television debut in Little Britain and also appeared in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is one of the seven actors followed by the documentary crew over several weeks.
At 4ft 8in he is the tallest dwarf in the house and describes himself as “a diva and proud of it!”
“In pantomime you’re so far from home and you haven’t got your family with you, so you become a small fantasy family and that gets you through the long hours,” says John, who followed his late father into showbusiness and now has his own drag act called Miss DQ.
Of his size he says: “If you look at a picture in a gallery, you see the image, you don’t look at the frame.
“ Look at us as a picture: look at our personalities, not our short frame.”
And of the comments people make he says: “They are more obvious. It’s kind of like a sense, you hear it, but you don’t acknowledge it, because if you acknowledged every single comment, it would take four hours to get to the shops.”
Jamie lives in a caravan at Potters Leisure resort near Great Yarmouth where he works as an entertainer.
Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs starring Vicky Entwistle (Coronation Street’s Janice Battersby), BBC Radio Lancashire’s Steve Royle and children’s TV favourite Jenny Jones (Hi-5) as Snow White is at the Grand Theatre from Friday December 2 to Monday January 2.
