Comedy kings The Grumbleweeds are back for another Blackpool summer season – at Sands Venue.
In a new venture for the comic couple – and the seafront cabaret venue – The Grumbleweeds will be performing for eight consecutive Tuesdays from July 24 to September 11.
Celebrating 50 years in showbusiness this year, founder members Graham Walker and Robin Colvill first teamed up in Leeds in 1962 and saw the group expand to five at its peak, and contract to two in more recent years.
Ironically this year’s opening night is almost a year to the date that Graham made his stage comeback on Blackpool North Pier after major surgery for throat cancer.
Doctors told him he would be out of action for nine months, he told them to make that six weeks.
Apart from family and close friends he kept his illness as private as possible.
“I didn’t want to make a fuss – I just wanted to concentrate on getting better. I didn’t want to let anyone down but we had to cut some of my dialogue and swap things around,” says Graham. “The opening night audience were wonderful but they thought I was putting on a comedy voice.
“Even when I said I’d had an operation they thought I was kidding and it was just a new catch phrase!”
Just weeks after their weekly North Pier show fell victim to the essential repairs which closed the theatre they returned with a family show at the Pleasure Beach Horseshoe Bar.
Tickets for their Sands Venue summer season run cost £16 and £12 with £5 for under 14s. Children’s meals and basket meals will be available and the shows start at 7.30pm.
Seats are bookable on (01253) 625262.
