The Fylde coast’s superstar wedding singer is set to ring in the New Year in fine style.

Fleetwood-based singer Howard Wing has just achieved the accolade of Best Live Entertainer in the North West Wedding Industry Awards.

The awards go right across the industry and include nominations for catering, wedding cake designers, bridal wear and hair/make-up.

Now the 37-year-old will travel down to London’s Bloomsbury Ballroom on January 9 for the industry’s national finals.

Howard launched his career as a wedding singer five years ago, specialising in swing. His repertoire includes a long list of standards, many of them originally performed by the likes of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, as well as more contemporary songs including the hits of current swing sensation, Michael Buble. Apart from simply singing, Howard also acts as toastmaster and often co-ordinates wedding receptions from start to finish.

Howard will be familiar to fans of former Fleetwood rock band Desormais, who were one of the town’s leading groups and had big things planned before they decided to split a decade ago.

Howard, who was the band’s lead singer, then took a radical change of direction, moving away from guitar-led rock and onto his current musical incarnation.

“I was able to give up my previous job, fixing and installing garage doors, five years ago and turn professional,” he said. “I’m loving what I do now. To win through to the industry finals is brilliant. I love swing. It’s stylish and you get to wear nice suits!

“I realised this was the thing for me a few years back and it fits in with my singing voice perfectly. As a wedding singer you are adding something extra to what is already a special day, so it’s a fabulous job.

“Swing came back into fashion thanks to the stuff that Robbie Williams did, as well as people like Harry Connick Jr, Jamie Cullum and Michael Buble. It appeals to all age groups and that’s the great thing about it.”

Howard will be getting one of his best suits ready for that trip to the capital after the New Year.
