Life, the universe and everything is heading to Blackpool Grand Theatre.
If you remember just how far down the street it is to the chemist or that however far it is, it’s just peanuts compared to space then prepare yourself for the original cast of The Hitchhikers Guide To the Galaxy radio show being reunited live on stage on Sunday June 17.
The Hitchhikers Guide To the Galaxy became an instant classic on its launch as a radio series.
Now Douglas Adams’ immortal creation explodes back into life, re-born in a ground-breaking new stage production – a radio show like you’ve never seen before – in surround sound, packed with laughter, robots, wild sound effects and drinks with extremely silly names.
The Hitchhikers Guide To the Galaxy began life on radio in 1978. Adams published the initial novel of a “trilogy in five parts” one year later.
The plot revolves around the adventures of an unassuming Englishman Arthur Dent, who survives the destruction of the Earth – however Adams rewrote the story in places for each new adaptation.
Douglas Adams claims the title, The Hitchhiker’s Guide To the Galaxy, came from an incident in 1971 when he was hitchhiking around Europe with a copy of the Hitch-hiker’s Guide To Europe book.
Whilst lying drunk in a field, looking up at the stars, he thought it would be a good idea for someone to write a hitchhikers guide to the galaxy as well…Adams later claimed that he had told this story so many times he had forgotten the incident itself and now only remembered telling the story!
The Hitchhiker’s Guide To the Galaxy, which was made into a BBC TV series in 1981, made a return to radio in 2003. A year later, a big-screen version was made starring Martin Freeman as Arthur Dent and Stephen Fry as the voice of the guide.
The legendary radio and TV cast, led by Simon Jones) as Arthur Dent, are re-united for the live performances bringing to life the characters written for them in highlights from the Hitchhiker’s Saga. They are joined on stage by a series of VIP Guest Voices Of The Book and supporting actors from Hitchhikers in all its phases.
Directed by Dirk Maggs, Douglas Adams’s choice to conclude the narrative in its original medium, The Hitchhikers Guide To the Galaxy Radio Show – Live! is an adventure which will introduce newcomers of all ages to Vogons, Babel Fish, Marvin the Paranoid Android and allow them to explore the unique and hilarious Whole General Mish Mash According To Douglas Adams.
