STUDENTS are set to take to the stage of Blackpool’s newest theatre.

After years of planning the wraps have come off the new performing arts facility at Blackpool Sixth Form College.

The sparkling 300-seat capacity theatre is part of the impressive £15m revamp of the Blackpool Old Road campus which is expected to have would-be actors, musicians, writers and production students beating a path to the college’s door.

Ian Carten, Blackpool Sixth’s Head of Performing Arts and Music, said: “The new theatre is an exciting addition to the college that will enable students to work within a highly professional setting.

“Blackpool Sixth aims to be at the forefront of music and the performing arts and this is reflected in our new facilities.”

The theatre will play host throughout the year to both professional and student productions, art events, fashion shows and concerts.

The expansion of the college, which has 2,000 students, continues apace .

Work should soon start to add another 1,000sqm of learning space. It includes eight spacious classrooms as well as a large study space on the ground floor to be used by the humanities department.

The new theatre will be on show to all prospective students at Blackpool Sixth’s Open Day on Saturday, September 24.

Current Year 10 and 11 pupils and their parents are invited to look around the college and will be among the first to see the new facilities, which include two dance and drama studios and 18 new English and foreign language classrooms.

Blackpool Sixth Principal, Felicity Greeves explains, “The purpose of this open day is to welcome prospective students to the college, showcasing our impressive range of facilities and ensuring they have all the necessary information before that important next step in their education.”

The open day will take place from 10am to 2pm. There are also two further open events, on Wednesday, October 5 and Thursday, November 10 from 5pm to 9pm.

Teachers and staff will be on hand to chat about each subject and provide help and guidance about university and future careers to every prospective student.
