Artists are being sought to take on places in a new dedicated studio space in the town centre.

Situated above Abingdon Street Market, artists will run the studios themselves in an environment designed to encourage collaboration the
development of new works.

Arts and creative initiative LeftCoast and Blackpool Council have established the studios, with the aim of creating a ‘new and affordable’ arts space in the town centre.

With studio room for six artists, Abingdon Studios will also have an exhibition space where the team will be able to share its work with the local comminity.

The space is being created to help to build the reputation of Blackpool as a place where high quality visual arts production takes place as well as giving it a much needed space for talented emerging local artists to base themselves and continue to grow in Blackpool.

LeftCoast’s artistic director Michael Trainor said: “This is a great opportunity for artists to secure themselves a space in the centre of Blackpool.

“With the Grundy Art Gallery, Venn Projects, Supercollider Contemporary Art Projects and the Old Rock
Factory studio space just on the doorstep, Blackpool is becoming one of the North West’s most important destinations for artists to live and work. Over the last year we have worked with artists from all over the country, and abroad, and they leave us feeling so inspired by their experience here.”

Coun Christine Wright, cabinet member for culture and heritage, said: “The LeftCoast programme is all about using Blackpool as a place where great art and great artists can prosper.

“Opening up some former offices to become specialist studios for artists to use is a fantastic idea and I think it will be a really sought after location for artists to use.

“Blackpool is getting back on the map for our heritage and cultural offer and, once set up, some designated studios in the town centre will be another string to our artistic bow.”

The spaces are priced between £60 and £100 per studio per month and LeftCoast are now inviting applications from interested artists.

The deadline for applications from artists is noon on Friday, October 3. To receive an application form visit www.abingdonstudios.org.uk or call 01253 477973.
