POULTON-LE-FYLDE Band almost struck gold at the North West Regional Championships held at the Blackpool Winter Gardens recently.
The band came third in the First Section of the championship regional qualifiers becoming the highest placed local brass band and narrowly missed out on a place to the National Finals, this year being held in Cheltenham, to represent the North West of England.
The band was under the musical direction of John Wood, who had his first concert outing with them at their annual Christmas Concert at Blackpool Grand Theatre.
When the band last represented the North West of England in 2007 it came third nationally and was promoted to the Championship Section.
First Section competition adjudicator, Malcolm Brownbill, made particular mention of the band’s good tone tuning and dynamics. Conductor, John Wood, said “It was a privilege to conduct the band at the event, they thoroughly deserved their high placing in a field of 11 very good quality brass bands from all over the north-west of England.”
The band looks forward to both a busy concert, marching and competition season with the annual Tameside and Whit Friday competitions soon approaching.
Despite its recent success, Poulton Band is always on the lookout for new players and currently has a few vacancies which can be found on its website www.poultonband.org.uk
It also has a Youth Section, led by John Squires-Evans, which is shortly holding its annual awards evening in Knott End.
