More than 850 soul fans had the mighty Blackpool Tower shaking at the Northern Soul weekender just gone – the heart and soul of the resort.
The usual stags and hens were joined by plenty of farmers of the young variety – but the real stars of the dance floor were the older “soulies” making a welcome return to a resort which has become the spiritual home of Northern Soul revisited.
Many had been regulars to the Highland Room at Blackpool’s Mecca, a Northern Soul magnetic long before Wigan Casino opened its doors to the bop till they drop brigade.
And while three nights and days of near non-stop Northern Soul can take its toll on some these days, the stamina kicked in as born again soulies strutted, stomped and spun till the midnight hour.
They included two lucky winners of weekend passes in our own Gazette competition – Sophie Tattersall and David Green.
There’s another Northern Soul weekend in Blackpool next month and another couple of tickets up for grabs too.
This time the venue is Blackpool’s Savoy Hotel at the second Northern Link soul extravaganza there.
Weekender passes worth £59, which do not include accommodation, are available and grant access to various events including gala buffet at the weekend from June 14-16.
More than 200 people last year enjoyed the first Northern Link singles weekender at the hotel.
This year’s highlight will be the Saturday night Wham tribute act, Club Tropicana cocktails and a themed buffet for residents and guests.
