What are the Scope Awards?

The Scope Disability Equality Awards is an annual event which shines a spotlight on individuals, community groups, businesses and role models, who are championing disability equality and changing attitudes.

The ceremony this year, hosted by Paralympic gold medallist Kadeena Cox OBE at Twickenham Stadium, was attended by guests including Scope Ambassadors comedian Ben Elton and racing driver Nicolas Hamilton, and nominees Christine McGuinness, actress Cherylee Houston and TV presenter Ade Adepitan.

Why was Christine McGuinness at the Scope Awards?

The 34-year-old model and campaigner, who separated from husband Paddy Mcguiness this year, had been nominated in the ‘Media Moment’ category, an award that recognises a media moment involving disabled people that has had a powerful impact on championing disability equality.

Christine was nominated for her BBC 1 show, ‘Paddy and Christine McGuinness: Our family and autism’, which explores the home life of the pair and their three autistic children: eight-year-old twins Leo and Penelope, and five-year-old Felicity.

During the thought-provoking documentary, Paddy and Christine meet people on the autistic spectrum, experts, and other parents of autistic children – including footballer Paul Scholes. Last year Christine also had an autism diagnosis, and she speaks candidly about what a relief her diagnosis has been.

Did Christine McGuinness win the Scope Award?

Unfortunately, the Blackpool star did not win the Media Moment Award, instead it went to Strictly Come Dancing.
