THREE medal-winning heroes from Great Britain’s Olympic team will turn on this year’s Blackpool Illuminations.
Beth Tweddle, Greg Rutherford and Luke Campbell – stars from London 2012 – will flick the switch to power up on The Lights on Friday, August 31.
Liverpool gymnast Beth secured a bronze medal on the uneven bars at the Olympics – making her the most decorated British gymnast in history.
Greg became the first Briton to win Olympic gold in the long-jump since 1964 and amateur boxer Luke Campbell won gold in the bantamweight division.
2012 marks 100 years of the Illuminations and the Switch-On is to be held on The Tower Festival Headland for the first time ever.
Beth told The Gazette: “I’m really looking forward to turning the Lights on – it’s going to be an amazing night and something special as I’m a local North West girl.
“I hope everyone can join us for what is going to be a fab evening.”
VisitBlackpool, Real Radio and Smooth Radio, organisers of this year’s Illuminations, said they were delighted to announce the Olympians.
The sports heroes will take to the stage on the Tower Festival Headland in front of 20,000 people after performances from a star-studded line-up of musicians.
X-Factor winners Little Mix, Lemar, Amy MacDonald, Lawson, Paloma Faith, Scouting For Girls, Noisettes and Blackpool singer-songwriter Karima Francis are among the acts.
Natalie Wyatt, Managing Director of Marketing Blackpool, said: “2012 is a platinum year for Blackpool Illuminations as it is the Centenary of our world-famous Lights, so it’s only fitting that some of our British Olympic heroes kick off the celebrations for us.
“We couldn’t be more delighted to be welcoming such an incredible group of people to officially switch on the Lights.
“2012 is a year which the whole of Great Britain will remember so it is wonderful that Blackpool’s historic year will also be celebrated with such inspiring people.”
Real Radio and Smooth Radio Managing Director, Michael McIntyre added: “After weeks and weeks of build-up we are delighted to be able announce our clutch of Team GB Olympic Medal winners as Switch–On stars for the 2012 Illuminations.
“These men and women are true superstars who, over recent years, have given their lives over to their sport to ensure they deliver for their Country and they did that with aplomb; now Blackpool can say thank you to them personally.
“The 2012 Olympics have been hailed as one of the best Olympics ever and I am confident that this landmark Switch-On, which sees us at the new Tower Festival Headland location in the centenary of the Illuminations, will be remembered for years to come as a Platinum event. The wait has been truly worthwhile.”
The concert will be broadcast live over both Real Radio and Smooth Radio’s national networks from 7pm and can be heard on both stations’ websites.
There will be a big screen erected on the Promenade by Central Pier for those who do not have wristbands to enter the main arena on the night.
