Beyond the Barricades, Grand Theatre, Blackpool

FANS of Phantom Of The Opera and lovers of Les Miserables were in for a musical treat at The Grand Theatre last night.

Beyond The Barricades returned for yet another packed out show which saw a magical mystery tour of some of the most loved musicals.

With the backing of a live band came hits from Miss Saigon, Phantom, Starlight Express, Blood Brothers, Chess, The Lion King and of course Les Miserables.

The shows may stay roughly the same, but the cast of four singers mix up different songs from the score to give a little bit of variety.

Compere and performer David Fawcett was in fine voice making a formidable Phantom and getting a standing ovation from some of the audience for his heartbreaking Bring Him Home from Les Mis.

At times he can sound a little bit like a cruise ship crooner, especially singing Starlight Express, but his big voice and personality are an integral part of the show.

Vocal powerhouse Katie Leeming also made a triumphant return. Her harmonies on I Know Him So Well from Chess, and Angel of Music from Phantom were strong and her version of On My Own from Les Mis was very moving.

Newcomer Sarah Ryan gave a haunting solo on Angel of Music and a beautiful version of Beauty And The Beast.

Andy Reiss multi tasked as ever combining keyboards with tricky harmonies and belting vocal performances throughout.

The show will be back at Christmas for a festive dose of favourites.
