The British Beard and Moustache Championships are coming to the Winter Gardens next year, with a range of wacky competitions including best styled beard, best
moustache and best fake beard.

Hairy-faced competitors will meet at the famous venue on August 25 2018 - including members of Blackpool’s own ‘beard club’, the Sandgrown Beardsmen.

Club founder Brian Eva said: “It’s the biggest beard and moustache competition in Britain.

“The three biggest competitions are the world nationals, the American nationals, and the British nationals.

“Last year people came from America, Finland, Spain and Latvia, as well as all sorts of people from the length and breadth of our fair isles.”

The British Beard and Moustache Championships is governed by the World Beard and Moustache Association, and takes place every two years.

Last year’s championships, in Liverpool, attracted more than 5,000 competitors, including dad-of-two Brian, who won first prize in the full natural beard category.

He said: “We bid for it a few months back and we were up against Birmingham, Oxford and Cornwall, and we were lucky enough to get the nod.

“The Winter Gardens is a great venue.

“Hopefully we can put our own Blackpool stamp on the competition.

“It’s open to anybody. Families can up with their kids and it’s bound to be a bit of a spectacle.

“There will be people there with huge beards and handlebar moustaches.

“There will be about 20 different competition categories, including fake beards for those who are folically challenged!”
