Blackpool’s world famous Opera House is set to become the most stylish cinema in the North – and Gazette readers are going to get the chance to select a film to show at its big premier.
A state-of-the-art cinema screen will be officially launched in the Winter Gardens during the Easter holidays.
Operator Crown Entertainment today announced work is to get underway to enable the theatre to show its first feature film in April after planning permission was granted for the installation of the screen – which will be able to show 3D films – and boast surround sound.
A satellite link will also mean the venue can broadcast live theatre and sporting events from around the world.
And bosses are today asking Gazette readers to nominate their favourite films to be shown on the big screen
Michael Williams, Managing Director of the Winter Gardens said: “This is an amazing addition to an already spectacularly flexible venue.
“The introduction of a cinematic screen and a state-of-the-art sound system will be an incredible focal point for local residents to enjoy classic and iconic film screenings.
“It also presents a number of exciting opportunities to screen live sporting and other significant events from around the world via a satellite link, while complementing the many staged productions appearing within the theatre over coming months.”
The screen installation is expected to start in the next few weeks and will be completed ready for the Easter holidays with the special launch screening for residents to take place in April.
It will be year round programming except when there are theatre shows.
The films will be themed at key times such as Rocky Horror at Halloween, and Christmas movies in December.
Mr Wiliams added: “During school holidays we will show family favourites.
“We intend to have a film club with membership offering incentives to members.
“The Wurlitzer Organ will be played pre-film and during the interval to create another unique and interesting spectacle.”
Coun Graham Cain, Blackpool Council Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure, added: “This is a really exciting development in the Winter Gardens offer and I’m sure it will attract a whole new audience to Blackpool as well as offering residents something a little bit different.
“The plan to show classic films is perfect and ideally suited to this beautiful venue.
“This will also be a welcome addition to the town centre as bars and restaurants in the vicinity should benefit.”
